In today’s story, we will go over the story of Ritesh Agarwal and his company OYO. Ritesh Agarwal was born in the town of Bassam Cuttack in the state of Odisha.
He was born to a fairly wealthy family that owns and operates a small local store in Southern Orissa.
He would have ended up in charge of the shop if he hadn't taken a different path in life.
Ritesh was looking for something fun to do so he began selling SIM cards at the age of thirteen.
For him, growing up was all about having fun and learning, but his methods were far different from those of other children. Aside from selling sim cards at 13 years old, he had a lot of fun messing around with the computer and looking for opportunities to make mistakes so he could learn new things.
And as a result, he developed a strong interest in software! He borrowed his elder brother's programming books to satisfy his hunger for coding.
He began coding when he was just eight years old, which is quite remarkable.
By the time he was in tenth grade, he had made up his mind that he wanted to work as a programmer. After graduating from St.
John's Senior Secondary School Ritesh arrived in Delhi in 2011 intending to create his own business while also studying for the SAT to study in the United States.
But In 2013, he dropped out of college.
Ritesh had doubts about his ability to succeed in education or a job.
As a result, he embarked on a journey to help small businesses increase their sales.
While at this, he also traveled a lot around the country, and this was how the idea of his first business came about. During his numerous travels, Ritesh witnessed that most inexpensive hotels in India didn't even meet the necessities of a tourist on a tight budget.
As a result of this opportunity, he launched his first company, Oravel Stays, in 2012.
It was a search engine for bed and breakfast accommodations throughout India.
It was designed to be a location for short and midterm rentals of bed & breakfasts, private rooms, and serviced apartments. Ritesh often said he knew his family would hate him for dropping out of school but he was not concerned about their opinions.
Well, his intuition paid off! He would go on to receive the Thiel Fellowship and a fund of $100,000 to pursue his dreams. Every entrepreneur has a back story to tell.
For Ritesh, going against his family's wish and dropping out of college is surely where it all began for him.
